Nicole Kidman shares rare admission about split from Keith Urban: ‘Felt deeply vulnerable’

Nicole Kidman has spoken with striking openness about the emotional toll of her separation from Keith Urban, describing herself as having been left “fearful and deeply vulnerable” in the wake of their split.

In a wide-ranging profile for British Vogue’s September edition, the 59-year-old actress acknowledged that the end of her marriage had caught her off guard.

“I didn’t expect this. I had a different view of what my life was going to be, but this is what it is now,” she told the magazine.

The couple’s divorce was completed in January, bringing to a close a marriage that had lasted nearly two decades.

Ms Kidman quietly initiated proceedings in Nashville last September, with irreconcilable differences cited as the reason for the split.

Reflecting on how she has navigated the aftermath, Ms Kidman said she had opted for a “feelings-first” approach rather than an analytical one.

“I don’t overthink things and I’m probably not that analytical. I’m far more feeling-centered and I lead with my heart,” she explained.

“It throws people, because I think they think I’ll be far more measured and I’m not.”

The actress continued: “You make all these plans and you have all these ideas of what it’s all going to be like and then it’s… not. You have to adjust. You adapt. The future, it’s completely unknown to me right now”

When asked whether that uncertainty frightened her, Ms Kidman responded in a direct fashion.

She replied: “There was a point where I was very fearful and deeply vulnerable, which is exposing.

“And then at the same time [I’m] going, ‘Well, I can either really not confront it and just curl up, or I can just go forward with an enormous amount of hope.'”

Both Ms Kidman and Mr Urban are originally from Australia. They first crossed paths in Los Angeles in 2005 and wed in Sydney the following year.

It was Mr Urban’s first marriage, whilst Kidman had previously been married to Tom Cruise between 1990 and 2001.

The former couple agreed to share custody of their two daughters, Sunday Rose, now 18, and Faith, 15. Neither party sought spousal support, and the divorce did not require a court appearance.

Ms Kidman, whose recent credits include Babygirl and the forthcoming Practical Magic sequel, said she remains committed to self-reflection despite the upheaval. “I’ve always wanted to live a well-examined life, so what does that entail?” she said.

“Trying things, making mistakes, failing, getting back up, moving on, embracing love, staying open, keeping the heart open and the possibilities.”

Reports have linked Ms Kidman romantically to Michael Reinstein, a private equity investor based in Los Angeles.

The pair were photographed together on the balcony of her hotel in Portofino, Italy, last month, though the actress has not publicly addressed the nature of their relationship.

“I can still approach things intellectually,” she told the magazine, “but my desire is not to be ruled by my head.”The full feature on Kidman appears in the September issue of British Vogue, which will be available for digital download and on newsstands from Thursday 20 August.
