ITV Trigger Point’s Eric Shango reveals brutal way actors learn their character’s fate in series

Eric Shango has revealed the nerve-racking way cast members can discover their character is being killed off in hit TV dramas.

The ITV Trigger Point star has played ambitious counter-terrorism officer Danny Markham since the explosive thriller first hit screens in 2022, working alongside Vicky McClure’s Lana Washington.

However, with death an ever-present possibility in the drama, the 26-year-old admitted that receiving a new script can prove particularly tense for its stars.

Speaking exclusively to GB News ahead of the show’s fourth series, Mr Shango explained that while actors are sometimes warned about their impending exit, they can also discover their fate while reading the script.

“There’s probably a number of ways. Sometimes people are consulted beforehand. The idea is floated to them,” he explained.

“But in most cases, you find out then and there. I don’t know whether it’s because producers get a kick out of it.”

Mr Shango stressed that Trigger Point’s team tries to prepare cast members for such major developments, particularly given the precarious nature of an acting career.

“On this show, they do their best to prepare people and have conversations about it, which is fair,” he said.

“Considering we’re living in a time that’s quite precarious in life and within our world of work.”

The actor acknowledged that losing a regular role could have a profound impact on performers hoping for the security of long-running television work.

He revealed that one of the first things cast members do when handed their scripts is check whether their character remains alive.

“That’s one of the first things that you do.

“You flip through the script to see if your name’s still there or whatever,” Mr Shango told GB News.

“When you do, you breathe a sense of relief, and if it’s not there, then you just have to kind of come to terms with it and, you know, honour the story, honour the work.”

Mr Shango’s comments come as Trigger Point prepares to return for its fourth series, with the actor warning that the threat facing the team has become “exponentially bigger”.

The new episodes will once again see Ms McClure lead the cast as Metropolitan Police explosives officer Lana, while Mr Shango returns as her colleague Danny.

Mr Shango suggested Lana’s personal struggles will raise serious questions about whether those around her can continue to trust her judgement as the danger intensifies.

He explained that the situation forces Danny to reconsider his priorities, including his wife and family, as the potentially devastating consequences of getting something wrong become increasingly apparent.

Away from the drama, Mr Shango also reflected on how his inner-city London upbringing helped prepare him for the challenges of his career.

The actor was raised in a working-class family by a single mother alongside his two siblings and credited his upbringing with giving him resilience, resourcefulness and a strong work ethic.

His Christian faith also remains central to his outlook, with Mr Shango telling GB News: “I just thank God because God is at the centre of a lot of what it is that I do and how I exist.”

Mr Shango added that his faith remains “incredibly important” in every aspect of his life and helps him remain humble and grounded as his acting career continues to grow.
