Meanwhile, HBO Max’s medical drama The Pitt secured the outstanding drama series award for a second successive year, finishing the evening with seven wins from a field-leading 25 nominations.

The ceremony was hosted by Law & Order: SVU star Mariska Hargitay, and history was made thanks to Welsh actor Matthew Rhys.

The 51-year-old etched his name into the history books on Monday night by becoming the first male performer to claim two acting prizes in a single year.

He took the lead actor in a comedy series award for Widow’s Bay and then pulled off a surprise victory in the lead actor in a limited or anthology series category for his portrayal of Nile Jarvis in Netflix’s The Beast in Me.

The latter win was considered a major upset, with Oscar Isaac widely tipped to prevail for Beef.

Mr Rhys had previously won an Emmy for The Americans, meaning he has now collected lead acting trophies across the drama, comedy and limited series categories – another first.

Fellow Brit performer Kate O’Flynn delivered a standout performance in the comedy supporting actress category, winning for Widow’s Bay and defeating last year’s victor Hannah Einbinder of Hacks.

Elsewhere, Scottish director Saul Metzstein also flew the flag, collecting the outstanding directing for a drama series trophy for Slow Horses.

The Apple TV spy thriller has now claimed a prestigious writing or directing Emmy for three consecutive years, having previously won for writing in 2024 and directing in 2025. Mr Metzstein’s victory came at the expense of the heavily favoured Vince Gilligan, who was nominated for Pluribus.

Gary Oldman, who stars as Jackson Lamb in Slow Horses, was nominated for lead actor in a drama series but lost out to Noah Wyle of The Pitt.

Scottish actor Alan Cumming was also part of The Traitors USA team that bagged an Emmy for best reality series.

Meanwhile, Jean Smart’s fifth consecutive victory as lead actress in a comedy series for Hacks brought her career total to eight acting Emmys, tying the all-time record held by Cloris Leachman and Julia Louis-Dreyfus.

It was one of just two trophies for Hacks, which had received a record 24 comedy series nominations for its fifth and final season.

Rhea Seehorn claimed the lead actress in a drama series prize for Apple TV’s Pluribus, finally securing an Emmy after going unrewarded throughout her tenure on the aforementioned Mr Gilligan’s previous series, Better Call Saul.

Sally Field, at 79, became the oldest winner of the lead actress in a limited series category for Netflix’s Remarkably Bright Creatures.

Allison Janney collected a surprise eighth Emmy for The Diplomat, whilst Tom Pelphrey triumphed for Task in the supporting drama actor race.

Apple TV emerged as the most decorated platform of the evening with 28 total wins, overtaking both HBO Max on 19 and Netflix, which slipped to third despite entering the ceremony with the second-highest nomination tally of 111.

Beyond the awards, the ceremony featured several notable moments, including a surprise appearance by Taylor Swift in a pre-recorded sketch with Ms Hargitay.

Noah Kahan performed Bridge Over Troubled Water during the In Memoriam segment, although a notable omission during the segment prompted furore online.

The evening also saw Michael J Fox receive the Bob Hope Humanitarian Award, presented by his former The Good Wife co-star Julianna Margulies.
