Dame Esther Rantzen has died at the age of 86 as tributes have poured in for the broadcaster and assisted dying campaigner.
In a statement, the family paid tribute to the “most wonderful mother” and “cherished grandmother” and said she will be remembered for her “endless capacity for joy”.
Dame Esther hosted the BBC show That’s Life for more than two decades from 1973 to 1994.
The programme led to the campaigner setting up Childline in 1986, delivering counselling for young people across the country.
She went on to launch The Silver Line in 2012, which aims to combat loneliness among older generations.
After being diagnosed with stage four lung cancer in 2023, Dame Esther became an impassioned campaigner in favour of assisted dying.
She said she planned to “buzz off to Zurich” to die by assisted suicide at Dignitas.
