BBC Keeping Up Appearances star dies aged 88 as tributes pour in

Anna Dawson, the actress best known for portraying Violet in the much-loved BBC comedy Keeping Up Appearances, has died aged 88.
The performer passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 27, in New Zealand, where she had been living.
Ms Dawson appeared as Violet, one of the sisters of Patricia Routledge’s memorable character Hyacinth Bucket, throughout the sitcom’s run from 1990 to 1995.
Her church, Christ Church Anglican at Kororāreka Russell, confirmed the news of her death on Facebook, describing her as “a much treasured member of our faith community.”
The church’s statement expressed deep sorrow at losing Ms Dawson, noting that “many from the Russell community will remember Anna and her late husband John Boulter who lived in Okiato and Tapeka.”
Her death comes just half a year after her husband John Boulter died in December 2025 at the age of 94.
Mr Boulter had been a soloist on the BBC variety programme The Black and White Minstrel Show.
