Beverly Callard fears she isn’t ‘healing well’ as former ITV Coronation Street star gives new cancer update
Beverley Callard has expressed concern that her recovery from breast cancer treatment is not progressing as expected, sharing a candid video with followers on Instagram.
The 69-year-old Coronation Street star, famed for her long-running role as Liz McDonald, told fans: “I’m not sure that I’m healing as well as I should be. But I’m so burnt and it’s just driving me mad.”
Despite her love of working, the actress admitted she was “so tired and so sore” and said she planned to speak with the hospital the following day.
She also revealed she had been battling persistent nausea, adding: “So it’s just everything. You go from one thing to another.”
Ms Callard first disclosed her breast cancer diagnosis back in February.
Her diagnosis came roughly six months ago, after she collapsed while taking part in I’m A Celebrity… South Africa and had to withdraw from the camp.
She went public with the news shortly before joining the cast of Irish soap Fair City.
The actress underwent a course of ten radiotherapy sessions at St Luke’s Hospital, completing the final one in mid-July.

Earlier that month, she had updated fans on her progress while sitting in the hospital garden wearing a leopard print jumpsuit, telling the camera: “Just finished number six. Over half way!”
Upon finishing her last session, Ms Callard had been in celebratory spirits, declaring: “I’ve done it! I’ve just finished my last radiotherapy session. Fingers crossed now.”
Her husband Jon McEwan could be heard offering encouragement, stating: “Positive thinking, darling.”
However, the reality of post-treatment recovery had already proved far harder than she anticipated.
In a video recorded from her bed on July 21, Ms Callard confessed she was “in shock” at the toll it had taken, saying: “This weekend, oh my god, I’ve felt dreadful.”
She described severe soreness across her chest and skin, resorting to “aloe vera, loads of lotions and potions” for relief.
Dizziness, exhaustion and nausea resembling morning sickness had also set in, while her appetite had disappeared completely.
The burning sensation, she explained, was not merely superficial: “My skin is so hot, and it feels hot inside as well.”
A fellow patient had summed up the experience bluntly, telling her: “Beverley, you’re still cooking.” A nurse had similarly warned that finishing treatment was really just “the beginning.”

Fans were quick to urge the actress to slow down, with one commenting: “You will get there. It took me 7 months but I had to stay off work and rest. You are overdoing it Beverley. Take care of yourself.”
Another follower wrote: “Sending lots of love Bev. I know we don’t know each other but you are such an inspiration to others.”
Ms Callard herself has been open about the lessons she has drawn from the experience, writing alongside one of her earlier updates: “So anybody else going through it, just remember, don’t expect too much of yourself.”
She added that while she was coping and trying hard, rest had become essential.
