EastEnders pokes fun at Meghan Markle with casting call for character ready to ‘cause chaos’
BBC Studios has issued a casting call for a new series regular on EastEnders bearing the name “Meghan,” described as “confident, gorgeous and ready to cause chaos.”
The move appears to be a deliberate nod to the flurry of jokes and memes that swept social media over the weekend after it emerged that the Duchess of Sussex was set to resume her acting career in Britain.
According to the casting breakdown, the role calls for a woman of approximately 30 years of age who will serve as a senior staff member behind a bar, likely the show’s legendary pub, The Vic.
Her entrance into Albert Square is likened to “an Essex bombshell walking into the ‘Love Island’ villa.”

The character is portrayed as “funny, fearless and fiercely loyal,” someone who “never backs down from a confrontation” and has “spent her whole life proving she can handle whatever is thrown at her.”
While “warm, charismatic, effortlessly charming,” Meghan is described as “equally capable of throwing someone out on their ear if they cross a line.”
The character will be Gemma’s daughter and a member of the Hawkins family, most of whom made their debut on the show last week.
The family was introduced as estranged relatives of Nicola Mitchell, comprising Gemma (Patricia Potter), her husband Ned (Jamie Bamber) and their son Ryder (Felix Uff).

Meghan would not represent the first brush with royalty for the BBC soap.
King Charles and Queen Camilla appeared in a cameo during a Platinum Jubilee street party episode in 2022.
Queen Elizabeth II also paid a visit to the set back in 2001, though she did not feature in any episode.
Performers hoping to audition for the part have until September 1 to submit their applications, when the casting call officially closes.
The weekend saw a wave of online jokes suggesting the Duchess of Sussex might be heading to Walford, after news broke of her planned return to acting on British soil.
Rather than ignoring the speculation, EastEnders’ production team opted to lean into the comedy, timing their announcement of a character sharing the Duchess’s first name to maximum effect.
The breakdown also notes that Meghan is a self-made woman who has “never relied on anyone else to get by.”
