The pair also reflect on the global fame brought by Mr McKellen’s Lord of the Rings role and Dame Judi’s appearances in the Bond films.

The programme also sees Mr McKellen speak about his experience of coming out, and his pivotal involvement in the campaign against Section 28, which was a 1988 UK law that banned local councils and state schools from “promoting homosexuality”.

The actor described one of his deepest regrets as being that he never revealed the truth about his sexuality to his parents.

She continued: “Just what it should be like between two people who have known each other for such a long time and share so many memories.”

The actress added that despite it having “been a while” since they last met, their bond meant little remained unknown between them.

“When something has lasted that long, there are very few surprises,” she remarked.
