Kirstie Allsopp blasts Green Party over landlord ‘hypocrisy’ as Channel 4 star fumes ‘this is outrageous!’

The 55-year-old wrote on X: “This is outrageous! The Green Party have been demonising landlords left. right & centre and now it turns out that they themselves are… guess what?” (sic)

The row centres on Mothin Ali, who serves as both a councillor and the party’s deputy leader.

An investigation by the BBC found that Mr Ali is the sole director of a property company holding two rental homes purchased with buy-to-let mortgages, a type of lending his own party has pledged to abolish.

The story was originally broken by the Times.

Mr Ali’s firm, MA Holdings, was registered at Companies House in December 2021, with Mr Ali recorded as its sole director and the individual with significant control, holding more than 75 per cent of shares.

The company acquired two properties in Leeds, one in June 2022 and a second in March 2025, both financed through buy-to-let mortgages.

The former owner of the second property confirmed to the BBC that Mr Ali’s company had bought the home and that it was intended to be rented out.

Mr Ali does not appear to derive any profit from either property.

The Green Party stated that he “has acted solely in the interests of vulnerable close family members for whom he has caring responsibilities,” declining to elaborate further in order to protect his family’s privacy.

The Green Party adopted its “Abolish landlords” motion at its annual conference in October 2025, declaring that “the private rental sector has failed, it is a vehicle for wealth extraction, funnelling money from renters to the landlord class.”

Both of Mr Ali’s property purchases predated this policy shift.

Responding to Ms Allsopp’s X post, many fans rushed to agree with her stance.

One penned: “The Green Party wanted to be the peoples’ party, guess the people are finding out. I will say again the conference I attended in Birmingham was a sham, their politicians are.”

“Political elite all the same different policies for us plebs business as usual for themselves,” a second wrote.

Another added: “If they’re paying his mortgage, he is profiting and he’s using housing benefit for ultimately personal gain.”

“Wouldn’t it be nice if politicians answered questions & had just an ounce of integrity,” someone else posted.

One more shared: “B****y hell, Kirsty. I don’t agree with a lot of what you say, but I’m 100 per cent with you on this! Hypocrites.”

The motion committed the party to phasing out private landlordism through tighter regulation and higher taxes on rental income, alongside a major expansion of council housebuilding.

Specific measures include imposing rent controls, scrapping buy-to-let mortgages, and granting local authorities the right to purchase rental homes at a reduced price when they come to market.

The party has sought to downplay the motion’s title. Green MP Carla Denyer told the BBC that “while the motion to conference had an eye-catching name, it does not actually ‘abolish’ landlords.”

A party spokesperson confirmed Mr Ali fully supports the landlord policy.
