The Grand Tour hosts share the ‘warm’ words of advice Jeremy Clarkson said off-camera after landing gig

Fans of the former Top Gear trio were even encouraged more than once by producer Andy Wilman to give the new trio “a chance” as they took on the daunting task.

And they did so with the endorsement of Mr Clarkson and co, with the 66-year-old presenter-turned-farmer telling Mr Holland, Mr Engelsman and Mr Bourgeois in the opening scene of the new series: “Don’t f*** it up.”

Speaking to The People’s Channel on the red carpet of the NTAs, the trio was asked if perhaps Mr Clarkson had some more family-friendly words of advice off-camera.

“Yeah, it was similar to what you saw on screen but maybe with a bit more warmth to it,” Mr Holland replied.

“Jeremy did sincerely say several times, ‘This is the best job in the world’.”

So what has life been like since landing the gig? “Every second is a moment of absurdity,” Mr Bourgeois said.

The state of disbelief remained in Mr Holland, too. “I need to go home and sleep for 30 days and 30 nights and wake up, and maybe I will understand what’s happened,” he remarked.

Prior to The Grand Tour, Mr Holland and Mr Engelsman endeared themselves to millions on their YouTube channel, Throttle House.

When asked what the transition was like going from online content to being backed by a streaming behemoth, Mr Holland explained: “It was in some ways similar and in some ways totally different.

“I mean, we come from a position of, like, no budget. So this isn’t just some budget; it’s a lot more.”

Despite the heftier cheques, Mr Engelsman revealed he found it relatively easy to transfer the skills over.

“It’s about the same muscle memory,” he said. “We’re very much like a garage band, and then you go and play on the big stage. You’re still playing the same guitars and drums.”

Mr Bourgeois answered in his typically dry fashion when he delved into swapping social media content creating to fronting the world’s biggest car show.

“It’s been quite a subtle adjustment,” he said with a smirk before adding: “But being able to just gush about cars, it’s been a fantastic release.”

The trio wasn’t up for an award on Tuesday evening, but they did take to the stage to hand out the gong for Best Docuseries.

And the prize went to none other than Mr Clarkson for his farming show, Clarkson’s Farm.

The 66-year-old saw off the likes of At Home With The Furys and Stacey & Joe in the category.

Speaking after the award win, Mr Clarkson branded it a win “for farmers”, noting how the prize was entirely public voted.

Elsewhere, other big winners on the night included Celebrity Traitors, This Morning, Strictly Come Dancing, Emmerdale, and Sir David Attenborough.

Vicky McClure also secured the Best Drama Performance gong for her role in Trigger Point. The category made history this year with an all-female nominee list.
