Taylor Swift divides Emmys fans with pre-recorded appearance at awards: ‘Cringe!’

Taylor Swift’s unexpected cameo during Monday night’s Emmy Awards sparked a sharply divided reaction online, with numerous viewers branding the pre-recorded segment “cringe” and “corny” on X.

The 36-year-old pop megastar featured in a Law & Order: SVU-themed sketch alongside ceremony host Mariska Hargitay, 62, which aired during the telecast on September 14.

The sketch saw Ms Hargitay reprise her role as NYPD Detective Olivia Benson, gathering her SVU squad, including Ice-T as Detective Odafin “Fin” Tutuola and Kevin Kane as Detective Terry Bruno, around a conference table to tackle one burning question: would Ms Swift turn up at television’s biggest night?

“In order to crack a Swiftie case you got to think like a Swiftie because the Swifties think everything is a clue to what she’ll do next,” Hargitay’s Benson told her team.

The detectives then deployed the programme’s trademark crime board, repurposed with clues about Ms Swift’s potential whereabouts.

Abbott Elementary’s seven nominations combined with its sixth series premiere added up to 13, Ms Swift’s well-known lucky number.

A further clue involved 13 Emmy nods for DTF St. Louis, which the team linked to Ms Swift’s husband Travis Kelce, 36, whose Kansas City Chiefs are based in Missouri.

The singer then appeared on screen not as herself but as a rookie detective, offering her own theories about the pop star’s likely location whilst referring to herself in the third person throughout.

She brought along her cat for the scene, nodding to her former status as a self-described “proud cat lady” before tying the knot with Mr Kelce.

Reaction on social media was nonetheless deeply split.

“So we got rid of the Limited Series categories for a really bad 5 minute Taylor Swift/SVU bit? Great job Television Academy,” fumed one viewer on X.

Another posted that the clip captured “the fact that she cant act.”

“Cringe AF with this Taylor bit #Emmys,” wrote one user, whilst another declared: “That whole Taylor swift thing was CORNY #Emmys.”

One particularly scathing viewer called it “one of the worst Emmy bits of all time” that “went on way too long.”

Others pointed out that Swift had lost all of her Emmy nominations the previous weekend, making the lengthy segment feel especially misjudged.

Yet plenty of fans were enthusiastic. “OMG I DID NOT EXPECT TO SEE MOTHER POP UP,” one Swiftie exclaimed.

Others called the sketch “excellent” and “hilarious,” with one noting: “If you’re a Swiftie this is actually funny because her fans really do this.” (sic)

The segment also marked a notable personal milestone, it was the first occasion Ms Swift had publicly acknowledged her husband since the couple’s wedding in New York City on July 3.

References to Mr Kelce throughout the sketch particularly delighted fans. The long friendship between Ms Swift and Ms Hargitay is well documented, with the singer having famously named her cat Olivia Benson after Hargitay’s iconic SVU character.

Despite all the speculation the skit generated, Ms Swift was never actually present at the ceremony itself.

She was instead spotted in the crowd at the Kansas City Chiefs’ NFL opener against the Denver Broncos, seated alongside Tom Cruise.
