Gillian Anderson told ‘talk about Gaza’ as pro-Palestine activists hijack actress’s appeal for Sudan

Sudan has been in the grips of a civil war since April 2023. It has resulted in famine, claims of genocide, and the displacement of millions. The United Nations has called it the largest humanitarian crisis.

On behalf of War Child, Ms Anderson took to Instagram on Friday to appeal for help. “The war in Sudan is devastating children’s lives,” she began in the social media clip.

“It’s not always in the news, but we know that every single day, more and more children are being violently attacked.

“And those who do survive are forced in terror from their homes and make long, dangerous journeys, with absolutely nothing. It is completely heartbreaking.

“But there is actually something that you can do. War Child is reaching children in Sudan and the surrounding countries, protecting them and providing lifesaving mental health first aid.

“And they cannot do it without us. So please, don’t wait. Donate to War Child today,” Ms Anderson pleaded.

She reiterated the cause in the accompanying caption: “Children in Sudan are currently living through the world’s largest humanitarian crisis.

“War Child’s partners are on the ground, providing safe spaces and lifesaving protection and mental health support to children, including those who are orphaned and alone.

“But the situation is getting more and more desperate with every passing day. We need your help to reach as many children as we possibly can.”

Within moments of sharing the video, however, the reaction was not the one Ms Anderson was expecting. “I love you, Gillian, but Gaza is suffering a lot too,” one Instagram user replied.

A second echoed: “Yet you won’t speak on Gaza and take money from L’Oreal.”

“I would love to see you use your platform for the people of Gaza,” a third added, followed by a prayer emoji. “You are an activist! The silence is deafening. There is a genocide taking place.”

“Silent on Gaza btw. Such an enormous disappointment,” a fourth commented, while a fifth remarked: “Mother is a zio?”

Littered elsewhere in the comments were activists asking “what about Gaza?” and “what about Palestina?” (sic)

Another activist penned: “Gillian, it’s so odd you don’t believe in a free Palestine though…”

Ms Anderson refused to engage with the comments, but was fiercely defended by plenty of other Instagram users who argued the charity appeal for Sudan wasn’t the best platform for Gaza activism.

“I’m sorry but why are y’all acting like it’s only happening in Gaza?” one person asked, while a second hit out: “If it’s not about Gaza, no one cares or they will just make it about Gaza, and you can see from the comments…”

“The comments really prove that people dgaf unless it’s about Palestine,” another weighed in. (sic)

While a fourth hit back: “Those who just want to talk about Gaza don’t care about anybody else. Not a word about the thousands of christians killed in Nigeria or the thousands displaced in Sudan.”
