Jeremy Clarkson divides fans with ‘weird’ annual A-Levels social media post: ‘Irresponsible of you!’

As thousands of students across England collected their grades this Thursday morning, the 65-year-old posted: “Don’t worry if your A level results are a bit disappointing.

“I got a C and two Us. And this evening I shall sit in my agreeable garden, drinking beer from my own brewery and eating food from my own farm. Prepared by my own chef.”

Mr Clarkson has been posting these results day messages annually since 2014, making this his 13th consecutive year of offering consolation to students who may be underwhelmed by their grades.

While Mr Clarkson’s post was predictable, so too was the furore he provoked among critics and fellow X users.

Mr Clarkson’s post managed to get on the wrong side of some: “The chef bit is weird always wil be. Rest is great,” one X user complained.

A second was similarly put out by the annual post: “You say that every year Jez. Boring now chap.”

However, a third weighed in to praise Mr Clarkson’s humour: “Fair enough. A-level results really aren’t the end of the world.”

“Careful, Jeremy, your annual A level tweet triggers a lot of useless Arts and social ‘science’ graduates,” a fourth mocked.

And a fifth simply lauded: “Favourite tweet of the year once again.”

But the naysayers hit back, with a sixth arguing: “Yeah and you’re probably 1 in 500000 that that happens too, irresponsible of you to suggest that kids will do the same.” (sic)

Each August, the format of Mr Clarkson’s posts remains broadly the same. The tradition has turned the former motoring journalist into something of a results-day institution, with his post now widely anticipated each summer.

Mr Clarkson’s academic career came to an abrupt end when he was expelled from Repton School in Derbyshire for drinking, smoking, and general troublemaking, departing with that now-famous C and two Us.

He went on to work in local journalism before moving into motoring reporting, eventually landing the role that would make him a household name – presenting Top Gear from 1988.

The Chadlington-based farmer now fronts Clarkson’s Farm, the Amazon series documenting his farming endeavours, and hosts Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, while still making occasional appearances on The Grand Tour.

Mr Clarkson’s A-level post comes days after he admitted the hot weather has rendered this year’s Diddly Squat harvest unsuccessful.

The 66-year-old shared a BBC weather screenshot on Sunday evening showing temperatures reaching 29C in Chipping Norton, near his 1,000-acre Oxfordshire holding.

As Mr Clarkson put it: “Harvest already f***ed. May as well just enjoy it now.”
