Trigger Point boss breaks silence on season five as Vicky McClure makes feelings clear on ITV show’s future

Trigger Point writer Chris Brandon has addressed the possibility of a fifth series of the hit ITV thriller, as leading lady Vicky McClure admitted she would be keen to return if viewers demand more.

The bomb disposal drama, which stars Ms McClure as Metropolitan Police explosives officer Lana Washington, has already secured a fourth outing after series three and four were filmed back-to-back over an intensive nine-month shoot.

However, with the future beyond the upcoming instalment yet to be confirmed, Mr Brandon has now refused to rule out taking Lana and her team through another series.

Speaking at a screening attended by GB News, the writer was asked directly whether there could be more Trigger Point after series four.

“Never say never,” Mr Brandon responded.

Ms McClure, who also serves as an executive producer on the drama, made clear she remains enthusiastic about playing Lana but believes the decision ultimately rests with viewers.

“I always say it’s down to the audience. They’ll let us know,” the 43-year-old explained.

She continued: “I genuine(ly), and I don’t think we can really base telly on figures anymore. It’s, you know, again, landscapes change so much.”

“If they want more, they’ll scream and shout for more. And I have a lot of fun making it, so we’ll see what they say.”

Ms McClure’s enthusiasm comes after spending nine months immersed in the Trigger Point world while filming the third and fourth instalments consecutively.

The Line of Duty star admitted the unusual stability of working on the same production for such an extended period made the experience particularly enjoyable.

She explained: “I’ve enjoyed series one and two. They were great, but for some reason, I think because it was three and four back-to-back, we settled in for nine months and went, ‘Right, let’s enjoy it,’ because we’re here for a while.”

Ms McClure added “having that kind of stability in this industry is rare”, revealing the cast and crew became even closer throughout the lengthy production.

The actress has portrayed Lana since Trigger Point first hit screens in 2022 and admitted simply getting into the character’s costume now immediately brings the bomb disposal expert back to life.

She recalled attempting to buy a pair of Dr Martens for herself, only to abandon the idea because they made her feel too much like Lana.

“The minute I put them on, I was like, ‘Oh no, I’m Lana. I can’t wear them,'” she joked.

Despite spending years with the character, Ms McClure insisted there are still new layers of the troubled explosives officer to explore.

“I don’t think anyone will ever know Lana inside out, bless her,” she admitted.

Series four will delve further into Lana’s psychological state, including through therapy sessions which Ms McClure revealed were partly improvised to allow her to explore aspects of the character beyond the show’s highly technical bomb disposal sequences.

Meanwhile, Mr Brandon has promised the upcoming episodes will continue escalating the danger, issuing the ominous declaration: “No one’s safe. Literally not. No one.”

He explained the creative team intends to “tighten the screw” with every episode until the mounting pressure inevitably reaches breaking point.

With Ms McClure still enjoying life as Lana and Mr Brandon refusing to close the door on another instalment, Trigger Point’s future beyond series four could now rest on the reaction from its loyal audience.
