‘Out of touch and insane’
Dawn French has sparked a fierce online backlash after posting a TikTok video in which she ridicules Donald Trump by adopting a baby voice and portraying the US president as a tantrum-prone infant desperate for affection.
The comedian’s clip, in which she refers to Mr Trump as a “big orange baby” wearing a nappy, has divided opinion sharply across social media.
Detractors have branded the performance bizarre and unfunny, accusing Ms French of being out of touch with reality. Some declared they would no longer watch her work.
Others, however, rallied behind the star, arguing that her characterisation of Mr Trump as a playground bully was entirely justified.
A number of supporters praised her willingness to speak out, even as some conceded the approach may not have been the most effective.
In the video, Ms French adopts the persona of Mr Trump as a whimpering toddler, pleading for parental validation while boasting about his power.
“So, big orange baby in charge of it all, he’s got a big nappy on and he’s going ‘mummy, daddy, please love me, do you love me, please love me, because I’ve got a big country I’m in charge of,'” she said in a high-pitched infantile tone.
The comedian’s Mr Trump character then brags about intimidating others, declaring: “Everybody’s scared of me because I’ve got a lot of money.”

REUTERSMs French also references the sexual assault allegations that have long dogged the former and current president, with her baby-voiced Mr Trump stating: “I can grab ladies by their front bum, nobody can stop me.”
The clip concludes with the character desperately begging: “Please love me, somebody love me.”
The video drew sharp criticism from numerous viewers. One commenter declared that French had “lost her mind,” whilst another described the clip as “bizarre.”
A particularly scathing response dismissed the comedian’s entire career: “This is what happens when people tell someone they are funny all their lives, but they were never funny. I was always a Victoria Wood fan, never understood the hype of French & Saunders it was juvenile trash.”

FEARNE COTTON’S HAPPY PLACE YOUTUBESeveral critics took aim at what they perceived as celebrity elitism.
“Another person I will no longer watch,” wrote one viewer, adding: “I had no idea how many of these non-reality livers in their elite world are so completely out of touch and insane.”
The tone of much of the negative reaction suggested audiences felt the performance was beneath a comedian of Ms French’s standing.
Not all responses were hostile, however. Supporters argued that French’s underlying message was sound, with one declaring: “She’s right. He’s a power mad bully.”

That same commenter pointed to Mr Trump’s remarks about a united Ireland and the Falklands as evidence of petulant behaviour, writing: “Talk about throwing his dummy out the pram!”
Others simply cheered the comedian on, responding with laughing emojis and encouragement.
Even among those sympathetic to Ms French’s stance, however, there was acknowledgement that the execution left something to be desired.
One viewer who appeared to agree with the sentiment nonetheless remarked that it was “not the best way to get a message across,” suggesting the baby voice routine may have undermined an otherwise valid political critique.
