Trevor Nelson shares ‘very serious’ brain tumour battle as he explains real reason for BBC Radio 2 absence
BBC Radio 2 presenter Trevor Nelson has disclosed that a brain tumour is the reason behind his absence from the airwaves since June.
The 62-year-old DJ shared the news in a video posted to Instagram on Thursday afternoon, two months after announcing he was stepping away from work for unspecified health reasons.
“I was minding my own business and then it was discovered that I had a brain tumour,” Mr Nelson told followers. “As you can imagine, I was shocked. In fact, my world was turned upside down.”
The radio regular acknowledged widespread speculation about his condition, noting that his phone had “blown up 20 times over” with concerned messages.

He said the outpouring of support from thousands of fans had motivated him to finally reveal what had happened.
Mr Nelson confirmed that after receiving his diagnosis, he was presented with treatment options before undergoing what he described as “a very serious surgery” several weeks later. The operation, he said, went “incredibly well.”
The presenter has spent the past month recuperating at home, combining rest with post-operative treatment.
Despite the gravity of his ordeal, Mr Nelson remained upbeat, telling followers: “I can only tell you the truth. I feel great right now, I feel ready to come back.

“I feel energised and almost back to myself. I’ve had a really serious situation but I’ve come out the other side.”
Mr Nelson revealed he has already been able to return to many of his usual activities, including playing golf and visiting the gym. The only things missing from his routine, he said, are his radio work and live DJ sets, but he is determined to get back to both soon.
“Please don’t worry about me. I’m on the mend. I really am on the mend,” he assured listeners.
His plan is to return to broadcasting first before picking up his DJ commitments at live events. “I feel raring to go. I feel in good health,” he added.
Mr Nelson also credited the World Cup with helping him through his recovery, describing it as a welcome distraction during a difficult period. He told fans they would be hearing him back on air “very, very soon.”
Several of Mr Nelson’s BBC colleagues flocked to the comments to wish him well. Zoe Ball wrote: “So good to see your face Trevor and learn that you’re doing well. Huge healing love to you wonderful man.”
Meanwhile, Clara Amfo weighed in: “Thank God for your brilliant surgeons, you’re meant to be here UT! Love you.”
And Fearne Cotton added: “We love you Trev. So happy you’re recovering well.”
